Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, the country’s biggest telecommunications providers, has reportedly become the target of a significant data breach. According to a post by FalconFeeds.io, a well-regarded cybersecurity alert platform, a threat actor has claimed to be selling a comprehensive database belonging to Econet Wireless Zimbabwe on the dark web. This breach allegedly affects the personal data of approximately 852,791 customers.
The exposed information reportedly includes sensitive details such as full names, email addresses, physical addresses, Twitter handles, mobile numbers, and potentially even more private data, raising alarms about the serious implications for customer privacy and safety. This incident occurs amid a troubling trend within the telecommunications sector globally, which has increasingly come under attack from cybercriminals.
Just days prior to this development, AT&T disclosed a breach that compromised data belonging to millions of its customers. Cybersecurity firm CloudSEK revealed that a vast dataset containing information from 750 million Indian telecom users was being offered for sale online. These alarming events highlight a growing pattern of vulnerabilities among telecom companies, making them attractive targets for hackers due to the extensive personal information they hold.
FalconFeeds.io reported that the post detailing Econet's breach was made on February 4, 2025, at 04:35 UTC, via the handle @FalconFeedsio. While the threat actor’s claim has yet to be substantiated by Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, the potential exposure of such granular personal information raises serious concerns about potential privacy invasions, identity theft, and various phishing scams aimed at unsuspecting customers.
